Mongaup River
Rio Powerhouse to Delaware River(Rio Reach)
Alerts
Log in to add an alertthis log is at the head of the island just above - about 100 feet above - the Delaware. At 1 barrel, the only release we can expect for awhile, the log's mostly just below the surface and not visible among all that whitewater, sticking out a good 20' from the head of the island, with several higher spots and an upstream angle and a lot of force to the water. Run mid channel to left. The last 'bridge' rapid is never a good place for those without a strong brace and quick roll with lots of cobbled rocks close to the surface. (not sure what the last rapid just above the last rapid is).
there's a spot about halfway through the run where the left side of the river has a very low tree bent over forming kind of a low arch, with maybe a few of feet of space to squeeze under it. It was too late to portage so I just went under the arch, but i had to lay down flat in my inflatable kayak as i passed under in order to fit. Current is moving swiftly there so be on your toes
Update: The low fallen tree I described has been cut down. The river is now clear
Eagle creek (the dam operator)energy generation forecasts for Rio on the Mongaup a day or 2 ahead. These are not guaranteed releases but projected generation based on day ahead energy markets. That means they are likely accurate but could change if there was a power emergency. - Thanks to Bob Nasdor and American whitewater for making this happen.
