Mike Webster Yes. Except for Moose Fest in October, releases increase the flow over Agers and down. Generally a Moose release can not effect the river above Agers. General?

Eric Adsit
Eric Adsit Between 2.2 (ish) and 5.5 feet on the McKeever gauge, if the dam is online and no release is scheduled, there will be no water from the Portage dam down. Below 2.5 and above 5.5, some water is allowed to pass through into the Bottom Bottom, but if it's below 2.4 it's not really worth doing. The Top 4 run with natural flow all the time, but as Mike said, during October Moosefest they get a bump up from the draw down of the Fulton Chain of lakes.

Sam Bernstein The dam occasionally goes offline as well in which case the section just becomes undamned essentially I believe. Happened last fall for several weeks.

Chris Koll
Chris Koll A Bottom Moose release simply means that some or all of the water in the river is allowed to spill over the dam at Agers. During a typical release, they'll spill around 600 CFS (which is about 3'). Obviously, if the river is under 3'--the spill is less. When the river is higher--say around 4'--they'll continue to divert some water which keeps the Bottom four more manageable.

how would you rate the difficulty of the hike to put in and the hike out?
Me hucking agers first waterfall
High water on the bottom half of the bottom moose is fantastic and not all that bad. we ran the right line dropped into the pool and launched the race line for the last drop. 5-6 ft waves exiting crystal!

While it was only my first one I have to say Moose Fest 2007 seemed to be a huge success. For anyone that was running Fowlersville Falls between 11am and Noon on Sunday or Magilla at around 1:30 I probably took photos of your run. I have over 600 high quality digital shots. Most of them from Fowlersville taken on the approach to the slide. I was just trying to get some good actions shots, but figure why let them go to waste. I am in the process of uploading them all to a Walmart photo group. The link is http://photos.walmart.com/groups/moosefest2007 so feel free to help yourself. You can also add your photos to the mix if I am not mistaken, so if you have some good ones of other people throw them up and share. I also have video from Fowlersville and Shureform so if you are in a Fowlersville picture or saw me standing at Shureform in the red fleece, shoot me an e-mail and I will see what I can do about getting the video to you. moosefest@howgreatami.com
The sneak(take left right before the rapid) to knifes edge is a good alternative at lower levels.
Just remember to stay right off the first drop unless you want to scrape up your elbow

I'd walked this rapid the previous two trips I'd made down the Moose. Overcoming the demons of the past is a liberating sensation.
Good friends, good water, and a lot of good times. Peace....
This is the final pitch of Shurform.
This was Nick's first run down the Moose.
Digging in.
This is looking upstream at Knife's Edge. Kurt is in the foreground, Jim paddling, Knife's Edge in the background. The sneak comes in right behind Kurt's head. Although we could only run the first four drops a couple times that day (no release) ya just can't beat paddling the moose on an 80 degree day in short sleeve rash guards.
Sean's the probe for our first run of Agers.
Liane's first run of Agers - a great way to spend a Wednesday!

There's nothing like redemption. This first time I ran Fowlersville I swam. There's nothing like waiting a year for a second chance.
This is the middle-left line. The approach has a bunch of little ledges that'll try to mess wit yer line. The Ratt Boy doesn't know it at the time of this photo, but he's about two feet right of where he should be...and the rock shelf on the right is going to play its own personal game of pinball with him.
Thanks to Barry Grimes for capturing this moment offa Dave Duke's video.
The North's answer to Gorilla.
The Fall colors were great that weekend.
This is probably a minimal level for this silliness. Paul's pretty much online.
His line was good...but he got backendered. Lucky for him, he drifted a foot or two into the current. A couple feet back, and... schlurrrrp...you get sucked back under the curtain, against the rocks, into the cave-- unfurl them throw ropes!
This looks like a great boof, but it's a rocky way to go. The real boofin line is river left of where the boater you see is at. (The normal Funnel line, a pleasant Class IV-, is in all that white stuff to the river right of the paddler.)
Funnel is a fun rapid. John Kobak says 'Anyone who runs the Boof at Funnel, has Boof for Brains.'
That's Dave Duke in the yellow helmet, taking a breather after holding their lifeline for several precious minutes. See Brent's boat over there in the eddy? I bet next time he won't commit to a blind drop until he knows it's clear!
Thanks to the three raft guides who hustled along the riverbank to help out.
This link provided to honor the first winners of the Keel-haulers 'N Sync Award!
It was a great line until he got worked in the u-hole above and swam. His foot was wedged against a ledge of rock which is all that kept him from going over. He was in this position until I climbed down from where I was, waded out to him on a rope, and pulled him back to shore. For the record, I had already walked the rapid.
Second run we tried to have three of us huck it at once. Matt got a little chundered.
The far river-left line (upper left in the picture) has a bad hole and a pothole. John's line, which I like, requires riding a ledge that's barely a boat-width, then dropping into the cauldron--hopefully with control--threading the needle between the two rocks. There's yet another line --a boof line-- but you can handle a little mystery, right?
This guy tried to run the river-left line, the one which has the pothole and which has been the site of a fatality. (No thanks!, for me!)
See Rescue at Knife's Edge.
A nice, class-IV-ish rapid with a few holes. One of the easier ones on the Bottom Moose, but there's a small eddy to catch (river left) if you want to punch up the difficulty a tad.
At this level, there's an optional line down river right, too; there's also a right-to-left line, but you'd better get it right-- or else!
The initial drop of Double Drop is the tougher line, especially at higher levels. This is rather an easy level for this rapid.
