Ive been going to the pesh since I was able to roll a boat that was way bigger than I was. 1st drop was the location to get your nerves set for the rest of the roaring rapids.
Unfortunately the land owner is extremely set in no one using high water mark or any other statement to scout or portage. In my case this year's record spring melt occurred on thr right timing for me to be able paddle it. 2nd was very large and I missed the line. I ended up swimming.
My group eddied out and I gathered my stuff. I wanted to scout 2nd thinking it was still open to review just not 1st. As the intent was we were going to run again.
While scouting 2nd the land owner aggressive approached with hand on side arm stating we were trespassing. Myself startled by visibly seeing a hand on a fire arm is not the relationship I want to have with any land owner along such a gem of the midwest.
I do not believe if emergency or dire need this owner would except trespassing of any kind. This is unfortunate as this is one of the best class 3 runs in the midwest. Only if there legal or nonprofit groups that deal with theae situations regularly would be willing to help mitigate at least a scout agreement to the major rapids.
Truly unfortunate

As of 2020, a new landowner, next to first drop, will not allow paddlers scout from shore. He is polite but very assertive about the rocks on river left, where beginners typically scout from, being private property and off limits to paddlers.

This hole gets sloppy at this level, not a lot of fun-
-2nd drop is better at this level.

Sweet blast at the bottom of 2nd Drop.
Horserace is the longest rapid on the Pesh culminating with some sizable holes and some squirrely eddies to catch.

First Drop is the first (hard to imagine, huh) drop of many on the Roaring Rapids section. The hole at the bottom has spanked many a boater.

The Peshtigo is one of the greatest whitewater rivers in the Midwest. Very little flat water, easy shuttle, moderate rapids that can be made more challenging, lots of small eddies to catch, play spots, reliable flows into the early summer, enchanting forest scenery (especially in the fall), and best of all the section ends at a bar with some of the best bar food around...
