Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportFun summer trip with the kids on the Red River. It was a beautiful summer day and we had lots of fun running multiple laps of several rapids and playing in every wave. The water was low but we still had plenty of fun on all the rapids and it was a great experience for the kids. We spent nearly six hours on this two mile stretch of river from the put-in at the powerhouse to our take-out at Ziemer's.
I really think the 'Green' on the flow chart for this river should go down to 100cfs, or at least 120cfs. We have paddled it twice around 110-120 cfs, and had no problems. As is often the case, more water would make for better WW, but the river is narrow and deep, so there aren't really issues with scraping.
The majority (all) of people I talk to feel the same way. I know many who paddle it repeatedly at 90cfs, and have lots of fun.
Found a throw bag at monastery 3-24-12. Email and identify it and you get it back.

(As reported to me, as of May 31) The log is reportedly OUT of Monastery Falls.
The wood in Ziemers is also either gone or far enough out of any normal route so as not to be of concern.
Both of these drops always merit scouting, just because there is little-to-no chance to avoid any wood once you commit to running.
can slide down bed rock and run the rest of rapid
Nice shot over Monastary top drop

Date, time, flow unknown. I had this photo 'in my files', and thought it should be shared, as it does an interesting job of showing the whole falls. Obviously, perspective becomes a bit distorted on such a panoramic shot. Unfortunately, I have no recollection who to credit with the shot.
C.J. Arnold playing air guitar on his paddle. Located at the entrance to Ziemer's Falls, this wave is overlooked by many boaters. At decent levels it provides for fun easy play, though wrapping currents can make it a bit tricky. The hole at the bottom of Monastery makes for a great play spot, especially at higher levels. She can be a little pushy too! Running the falls 1 of 6.

Out with the Wisconsin Hoofers on the 2001 reunion.
Last wave up from the town of Red River. Perfect spins and front surfs!
If the tips of these rocks near the put-in are showing with the gates open - Monastery is class III. If they're submerged it's a III+ or better.
Stay off river left if you know what's good for you!
Just for fun, 'regulars' to this river often like to do a summer 'inflatable rodeo' at the main hole at Monastery Falls. The photos associated with this report show just one such occasion.

Laura and Mike decide to show the rest of us how to play around in the Nyami Nyami K2 (designed and manufactured by Slate River Kayaks) during the annual UW Hoofers rodeo.
