11. Ishi Pishi Bridge to Dolans Bar(Ikes Run)
The Salmon River (Masúhsav) beautifully joins the Klamath River (Ishkêesh), setting off a collision of currents full of boils and seams. In the Karuk language this current is known as apsun'íshvit, which roughly translates to "snake-half," an apt description for such sinuous water and a description almost certainly gained by indigenous experience in boats at this sacred location long before any whitewater paddlers arrived. The confluence of these two rivers and the surrounding land and waters hold deep spiritual significance for members of the Karuk tribe, and visitors should treat it with respect and dignity. The Karuk Tribe is seeking the return of this land, which they never ceded, and in 2022 U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman (CA-2) is introducing the Katimiˆın and Ameeky ́aaraam Sacred Lands Act to return the land from Ishi Pishi Falls to Ike's Falls to the tribe.
