Id like to preface this Alert by saying that I am not a kayaker, so please excuse my shoddy boater terminology. I very recently lost someone close to me (a 30+ year veteran kayaker) directly above the sinks(screaming meanies rapids). What we understand to have happened is that, for unknown reasons, he had to ditch his boat on the first drop immediately after put-in, and subsequently swam the second drop, where he was pulled under the large boulder(a known undercut) on the left side of the river immediately following the drop, was entrapped, and tragically was not able to get out or be rescued in time. I see the danger of swimming this rapid vaguely stressed on a few blogs and forums across the internet, however I don’t believe it is enough. One quote I saw from an article, which I unfortunately can’t find to cite(maybe wet state), was “class 4 rapids with class 5 consequences.” Indeed. This was a highly experienced kayaker who paddled class 5 rapids around the country and internationally. Anything can happen on the river and I just want to make people aware of this spot to possibly prevent another tragedy like this. Please stay safe out there.
There is a log in Elbow. Be careful and scout first
