Spring 2023 Access Road IssuesJeff Venturino
Apr 13, 2023

Access to the Tuolumne River is currently impacted by the severe winter storm events we experienced this year. Ward's Ferry Road is closed on both the Groveland and Sonora sides by Tuolumne Public Works. Lumsden Road had a culvert fill and then overtop/scour at MP 0.5 and lost more than half of the road width to scour. Cherry Oil Road has several slide events.

American Whitewater is working with Tuolumne River Outfitters, the SFPUC, and the USFS - Groveland District to find solutions to each of these access challenges. Access via 1S01 (the South Fork Road) will likely be possible thanks to the SFPUC by Memorial Day 2023. Lumsden Road and Ward's Ferry Road may take longer.

We'll continue to update this alert and Jeff jeffventurino@americanwhitewater.org can answer further questions as the spring progresses and technical information about the roads damage becomes available.

March 2011
Lumsden Road to the put in at Merral's Pool is closed due to a landslide approximately 4.4 miles from the intersection of Lumsden Road and Ferretti Road.

For more info call the Groveland Ranger District at 209.962.7825

Alternative access is to hike down the South Fork road/trail or to drive in via Cherry Lake road.

There is also a service to transport gear into the river via ATVs which can get around the landslide. Call Tuolumne River Shuttles at (209) 962-4662.
