River Description

1.5 mile hike to put-in.

AFWS Current Rainfall Data for Caldwell County.

Gauge 1835, Edgemont, is at the take-out for this section.

Upper Wilson actually starts above US-221 on Grandfather Mountain.  Seldomly (if ever) run it is just a pile of boulders all the way down to the confluence with Little Wilson.  From Little Wilson down to the traditional put-in for Upper Wilson (on the trail out of Gragg, NC) are several more portages and lots of wood.  If you are the adventurous type then run Little Wilson from FR192 down to Wilson creek and run Upper Wilson down to Edgemont, NC

Since no one else has put any comments regarding the actual run, I will. This baby is way fun at high water. Shortly after you put in, the action picks up and is fairly continuous. If you decide to take out at Roseboro Rd., be aware that you will have portage several bridges.

Finding the trailhead for Upper Wilson is now much easier. There is a street sign that says Wilson Creek Trail at the trailhead. It has been cleared out and improved somewhat. I am not sure about the status of parking in that little race off FR 45.

Finding the trailhead to get to the put in is much easier said than done. The traihead is right in the 'suburb' of Gragg, but it is not one of the 'streets' with houses. It is a gated road, but this is misleading since the gate is just out of sight of the main road. There is a trout fishing sign by the gate. Hope this helps.
