River Description

This 3-mile stretch of Moose River runs parallel with Moose River Road from the Gauge Station to the Iron Bridge. The river is only visible from the road at the put-in and then again near the take-out. There are 4 named rapids on this section of the river, considered a great run for beginners, and is even runnable throughout most of the summer months.

Put-In

Distance: 0 mi

The put-in can be found about a mile down Moose River road coming from Route 28 in McKeever. The old put-in used to be the gauging station, but now there is a parking lot farther down river you can go to and cut out about 3/4 mile of flatwater paddling.

Initiation

This is a 2 part rapid and is the most technical of any on this section of the river. Novices should scout. The best and most exciting line is staying river right, and hugging the big rock over a 3 foot drop into a meaty hole.

House Rock

Class: IIIDistance: 2.1 mi
Rapid
House Rock

House Rock is punctuated by an enormous rock rising out of the center of the river. It is slightly undercut, but not too much to worry about at normal levels.

Dogleg

Class: IIIDistance: 2.36 mi
Rapid
Dogleg

Dogleg wraps hard right and then back to the left around a big rock. You can paddle right up to the first hole and pull out river left to take a closer look.

Rock Island

Rock Island

You can take out above or below Rock Island. At 3ft or more a little hole river right becomes a fun play spot.

Iron Bridge rapid is optional depending on where you take out, but it is a fun, two part rapid.

Fun rapid, there is a decent sized pour over on river right just above the House Rock that gave us a bit of a surprise. I would say 3' should be the minimum not 2.3' .
Entrance to the rapid. At this level there is pretty much just one line. Far river left, hug the rocks on the left while you go down the tongue. Eddy out on the right behind the island if you want and then do the second half which is straight forward.

Dogleg is the kind of rapid that is fast and pushy and will toss you real quick as Joe found out, hitting his first on-river combat roll.
