River Description

The upper section of the Wild Ammonoosuc generally runs when everything else is too high. This upper stretch requires slightly more water then the lower section. This is a long stretch of river, ten miles long, with a number of access points allowing you to tailor your trip for length and difficulity.

Put on at the Wildwood Picnic Area (across from the Wildwood National Park Campground) where the river finishes a steep decend from it's headwaters and merges with multiple streams hopefully providing enough water to boat.

From here the river travels thru the woods. It is mostly class II with a few stretches of flat and quickwater. The next access point is where it runs under Tunnel Brook Road a few feet off the main road (44.0917N/71.8266W). From here the pace picks up to continuous Class II as river mostly follows along the road. Another easy access point is where Route 116S branches off Route 112 (44.0980N/71.8482W).

Take-out at a public water supply dam (44.1058N/71.88679W). Below this point the river gradient increases and becomes continuous Class III.

Flow info:

The correlation gauge is located on a neighboring but similar drainage. There is a hand-painted paddler's gauge on the center abutment of the covered bridge at the take-out.

Levels:

3.5 = medium

Note that at higher levels a wave forms around the gauge. Read it as an average level, ignoring the peak of the wave.
