River Description
Chris Mann provides (2003-09-05 19:31:42):
Good put in is at end of road by the pipe crossing the river. Right off the bat you will run the gorge, a rather short IV - V run. One rapid I consider to be a must portage, about halfway through the gorge. It has a nice hole at the top of pour over with a rock at the bottom.
Once out of the gorge it's an easy II-III float. Even though it's a rather short section, it took us about 3 hours to run (had to do a lot of scouting). It could probably be done in an hour.

Log in to add a reportJust ran a short section of this run yesterday a couple times with an Alpacka packraft. There's a new hydro plant just north of the trailhead so you have to hike about a mile to get to a put in that will get you to get to the gorge with the drop (rock at the bottom) or do what I did and go past the 'authorized personnel only' sign and put in at the hydro discharge point. You get into Cat-3 immediately which is perfect for my little raft. It's glacier melt so expect some cold water. The river calms down to Cat-2 about 1/4 mile where it meets up with the road again and you can take out at the road and hike back up to the hydro plant. After meeting up with the road there are a lot of sweepers & strainers through the alders so I recommend not running all the way to Eyak Lake in a raft.. probably recipe for a puncture. About a 15 minute ride. There are a lot of rocks to avoid so you have to be pretty balls out in the raft. I think it would be a lot more enjoyable in a kayak. *
