I'm a paddling instructor at Camp Arrowhead in Tuxedo, NC this summer and that means I can't get away from work at the drop of a hat when it rains; I have classes to teach and kids to look after. Anyway, after all the rain, one of the camp's new owners asked the paddling staff (Jez Blanchard, Joel Forbes, and me) to check out the section of the creek from the camp to Green River Road since he had never seen it and was interested in using it for the paddling program. We put on and paddled (bombed down) about a half hour on the ~1.5-2 mile section. It is a technical class 3+ micro creek with low gradient that becomes a 4+ run when you factor in the strainers that make the lines much more difficult. Several times we had to duck under laurel branches that hung into the water all the way across the creek and had to portage in two places because of creekwide log jam/strainers. The scenery is beautiful. Because of the small size, several places are in a canopy of green and mossy boulders lined most of the run and there are creekside caves with water running off of them. Most of the run was tight, fun boogie water and there were very few distinguishable rapids during the continuous section (1/4 or 1/3 of the run, almost no eddies that would fit more than one boat).

Anyway, wanted to share the quick version of the trip report. I know Leland Davis used to work at Arrowhead and he may have paddled part of this. Let me know if you know any thing about this run. It doesn't run often, but when it does, it's easily worth it for the beauty.
