River Description
What a beautiful river with the high rock walls and birds of prey residing in the cliff faces. This is not a good section for the serious whitewater boater but is a great section for the serious fisherman.
Most people take out at the public landing at Pembroke instead of floating to Ripplemead, or put in at Pembroke and float to Pearisburg (Bluff City).
While in this area, you should see the Cascades waterfall just out of Pembroke. The falls are over 60 feet high and can be reached by a fairly easy 2 mile hike in. Little Stony Creek has been granted a tier-3 Exceptional Waters status from the state and runs beside the hike to the falls. If you like serious creeking, then check out the Little Stoney reach.
Mountain Lake, where they filmed Dirty Dancing, is but a few miles from here and the Castle Rock and White Rock rec areas are nearby.

River Features
Put In - Eggleston (Ingles Landing)
There is a relatively new (circa 2021) access ramp at Eggleston under the Rt. 730 bridge on river left, called Ingles Landing. Ramp and parking, but no toilet. Formerly folks drove upstream on the gravel road to a wide spot next to the river (you can still do that if you want an extra half-mile or more of river). To get there from Rt. 460, turn onto Rt. 730 at Maybrook. Cross the bridge over the New and take the first left, bearing left and crossing the railroad tracks. Then turn left and immediately right into the access area entrance. There is excellent signage.
From the Pembroke takeout, cross the bridge over the New on Rt. 623 (Rocky Hollow Rd.) At the stop sign at the top of the hill, turn left on Rt. 622 (Guinea Mt. Rd.) and take it all the way to the stop sign in front of the Palisades restaurant. Turn right, then right again on Rt. 730, then immediately left on 622/River Rd.
Take Out #1 - Pembroke Access
Most people take out at the Pembroke access, which also shortens and simplifies the shuttle. To get there from the flashing yellow light on Rt. 460, turn south on Cascade Dr., opposite the gas station and Tangent Outfitters. Turn left on Snidow St. and then take an immediate sharp right on River Rd. Cross the railroad tracks and then bear left into the boat ramp area. Boat ramp and plenty of parking, but no toilet.
Take Out #2 - Ripplemead
The Ripplemead takeout is on river left not far past the Walker Creek confluence. Boat ramp, ample parking, and a pit toilet. From the flashing yellow in Pembroke, take 460 west, cross the bridge over the New, take the Ripplemead exit, and turn right at the end of the ramp. Follow the road as it curves back under the bridge and upstream to the ramp.
Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportRan this tandem 8/7 - 8/8/2021 at 3.2 ft on the Glen Lyn gauge. There are fairly regular class I - II ledges for the first couple of miles below Eggleston with a long (~1.5 miles) flat stretch above Pembroke. You won't mind though, because the scenery is just gorgeous!
Did Eggleston to Ripplemead today at 4.26 feet. Water level was very good for the float.
Very pretty trip through the bluffs. Occasional ripple rapids, with one Class 2 just past the Pembroke boat ramp.
A smaller falls below the main falls
Just a bonus on the way to see the Cascade Waterfall
