Ran this monday with the water a little above 1400 cfs! this flow seems to be way to dangerous unless u are expert and this is not me at all! was an exellent run all the way down to the old mill at this rate of flow it had to have been a class five there at the mill ... the hydrolic was very dangerous it held a friends boat there for about two hours . so anything over 600 cfs here i would scout it. also this was my first run here but i will be back it would be a great run anything above 200cfs.
I paddled the Snake with a few other local paddlers this past Saturday. The creek was running at 450 CFS (I think this correlates to around 3.5 feet). I thought this was a good level, not too high, but high enough to remove scrape factor from the run. Be careful at the foot bridge it's a little tight. Watch out for strainers, and as you approach the mill rapid, be careful of the hole that forms on river left at the last ledge before the mill rapid. At this level, this run is just as fun as the Upper Hooch or Cartecay.
This is a hole (pic taken at 400-450 cfs) on the river left side of the last ledge before entering the large mill rapid. This is a very nasty and retentive looking hole! Run this ledge on river right, and then ferry back across to river left to run the Mill rapid.
Looking back up stream at the first drop after the bridge. Class II, about 3-4 ft drop, left and right channels runnable.
We ran this creek at 3.4 feet with a small 2 person oar rigged raft. It was a good level.
We had great runs on friday and sat after Ivan. The drop below broken horshoe dam and near the old carding mill had some pretty strong hydrolics. Its back to bounce on the rocks and drag on the gravel now. We were able to remove an old hot water heater that was blocking part of the low water run below horshoe dam.
ActiveLife Adventures at Snake Creek Gorge will be outfitting trips down the creek and on the Chattahoochee. WWW.historicbanningmills.com or Http:/ActiveLifeAdventures.homestead.com/ will have more info soon. The Dam is above the run and has kept water levels more stable so far.
We ran snake back in the fall, I don't know where the reservoir went, but it's not on top of the run. The water was low, 2.1 as I recall, it would be better with 5 or six more inches. Look for the pipe on the upstream side of the takeout bridge, if it is under water it should be a fun ride.
On June 18, 2003 a small lake above this run had it dam burst due to locally heavy rains. The gauge hit 3000 cfs. Thats probably some kind of record.
Does anyone know if the reservoir was built above this run, or on top of it??
