Charley
Upper river gravel bar to Yukon River to Circle
Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportI ran this with two others from the 13th of July to the 21st of July 2020. We flew to Three Fingers Airstrip. One of our party drove a car to Circle and left it at the airport there. They were picked up by the pilot after dropping off the first two. This works well logistically and allowed for an air scout of the lower portion of the Charley River.
We ran in packrafts, which were a good choice for this time of year. We had some intermittent boat dragging on sections, but these were never more than 100 feet and typically just over a river wide gravel bar.
River is mostly class I/II with some sections of Class III. There is a short section the pilot referred to as the 'Rock Garden' that could be more difficult at higher spring flow. This section is shortly after the put in branch joins the main Charley River. There were also a couple of higher gradient gorge sections that could be more difficult with higher flows. These sections would also offer few eddies for full size rafts.
Past the 'Rock Garden' area the river gets progressively easier with less gradient.
The Yukon moves quickly. We were able to make Slaven's Cabin to Circle in a single long day, despite a stiff wind that forced us off the river for a few hours.
Tok Air Service was the only company we could find to fly Three Fingers. Zak, the pilot, was great and helpful with logistics.
