River Description

Big water, big play. This destination play river, about an hour and a half NW of Ottawa, gets flow all summer long. After running McCoy's Rapid, the intrepid surfer has the choice of the Main Ottawa or the Middle Channel. Paddlers typically run the Main at normal or lower flows and opt for the Middle at higher water--but the choice is a matter of taste.

River Features

Putin

Distance: 0 mi

Off Grants Settlement Rd., take a right onto McCoy Chute Trail. Park in the lot and walk down to the putin.

McCoy's

Class: IVDistance: 0.6 mi
Hazard
McCoy's

Scout from an island on the right. This long rapid starts out with a bang! Most paddlers 'thread the needle,' heading just right of Sattler's Hole, lining up to avoid the notorious Phil's Hole on the left. One great way to screw it up is to shy away from Sattler's just a bit, which will give the intrepid paddler no room to avoid Phil's. After Phil's, big water takes you toward river left. Most paddlers curve around right to catch a tongue down the center of the Horseshoe Hole. Great fun awaits at the end! Baby Face, a play wave at the runout, is an awesome bouncy surf at levels around 1 foot or less.

Lorne

Class: IIIDistance: 2.16 mi

Scout this one from a rocky bluff on the right. The rapid begins with Black Tongue, a smooth tongue which leads into a huge breaker. Stay down the center, keeping your bottom side down through the waves and associated chaos, and grab the huge eddy on the left to head back upstream to surf Garburetor (playable ca. 1 foot and lower). At the end of the wave train, head right to run through Waikiki; eddy right to surf that baby.

Pushbutton

Class: IIDistance: 2.47 mi
Pushbutton

A small rapid with some easy surfing waves.

Butcher's Knife

Class: IIDistance: 2.83 mi
Butcher's Knife

Another wave train, with 'Butcher's Block,' a play wave, and ending with 'Brain Douche,' a squirt/whirlpool spot at the end. The bigger the water, the bigger the whirlpools in la Douche.

Norman's

Class: IIIDistance: 3.68 mi
Rapid

Another big wave train, with squirrelly eddy lines (especially on the river-right edge). Keep on paddling and don't let up, as the boils and swirls can mess with your line. Eddy out on the right, to prep for Coliseum.

The play wave/hole at the top is only surfable at high water (8+ feet).

Coliseum

Class: IVDistance: 3.93 mi
Hazard

Like McCoy's, this is one with two huge offset holes. At normal levels, one good line is to run the tongue down center-right, then ferry through boily funny-water to the left to avoid the Kahuna down below. Scout from river left.

Black's

Class: IIDistance: 4.48 mi

The last play hole at most levels. Play left or right, depending on the level.

RiverRun Takeout

Distance: 6.22 mi
Take Out

There are several takeouts, each on private property. The charge for taking out at RiverRun is $5 bucks; the charge is included in the camping fee.
