River Description

The Soo is just on the other side of Whistler from the Cheakamus and Callahagn, about 15 minutes from the Cheak TO campsite. For you easterners it has a Gauley-esque feel, in particular Insignificant Rapid but with a higher density of holes and pourovers. So imagine Insignificant for 2-3 miles with some pools and lots of holes thrown in. This run could tolerate a wide range of levels. However things could get epic with high water. One put in is at a power station which is above a class V-VI gorge (N50.22297 W122.89604). The channel from the power station meets up shortly with the Soo. The river meanders along at a quick pace with great scenary before the first gorge on this section.

Scout the first gorge on river left on the railroad tracks. The first drop is OK, the second drop leads into a massive river wide hole. There is a fairly steep climb down to the river below this drop to run the remainder of the gorge, which is about 200 yards of solid class five. An easier put-in is below the gorge. After that the river is fairly constant class IV-IV+. The shorter put-in is here (N50.23082 W122.87096).

Watch out early on for Tommy's hole. There is something resembling a horizon line. Right line is chock full of boily holes. The left line has some boofing potential for missing the holes. Scout on river left or charge it blind for maximum excitement!

There is a large (very large) rock slide on river left which flanks a long but easy IV. Below this is a hungry, violent hole ledge in the center of the river, sneak left or boof right. Next is Linda Lovelace, the biggest drop on the river, scout on river left.

After that the river keeps going at a similar pace for a bit and then the whole river just tilts every so slightly downwards. The result is a long section of continuous, pour-over infested boogie that takes you to the takeout, sooner or later, depending on how many hole rides you had.
