River Description

The Little Popple will look small and tame from roadside on CTH.N. Not far downstream it drops nearly 40' in about 0.2 mile within a steep rocky gorge.

Unfortunately, at the end of the gorge, the flow breaks into braided channels, none of which is likely to carry enough water to boat (at least, at levels you are likely to want to run the gorge). In addition, most all of the braided channels will be blocked by deadfall.

Downstream of this area the river has no appreciable gradient. It is miles to the next access, and deadfall is very likely to be a problem. For this reason, it is recommended that anyone boating this gorge should carry back up from the end of the gradient.

The following video provides a fine low-water look at the run (complete with a boat pin from 0:10 until 2:20): Low-water run of Little Popple's dells

I ran this last spring and it was a great run to lap, but the hike out is quite long. The entrance move into this rapid is a boof over a ledge hole that is backed up by rock. After the entrance hole the rest of the rapid will go very quickly, so make sure you scout very thoroughly before running it.
