River Description
Several really nice surfing waves can be found just a few km downstream of Trail, BC, on the Columbia River. The main waves are just downstream of Rock Island, and a turn off of Highway 3B provides easy Park and Play access. At lower flows paddlers will be able to pull off just about any hole freestyle move in Hero Hole. Right next to the hole is a nice glassy wave perfect for carving in long boats or front surfing in short boats. Just downstream of that wave is another wave that is great for spins and blunts and other wave freestyle moves.
If you go to Trail for a surf session, be sure to drive a few km south and check out the massive Waneta Rapid on the Pend Oreille River under the 22A bridge by the border crossing, and Brilliant Wave is another option right in trail on the Kootenay just downstream of Brilliant Dam.
