River Description

This is a tributary of the White River (in the Bad River watershed).

Drainage area is sufficient for theoretically boatable flows, and gradient is sufficient for potential whitewater interests. However, we have no specific knowledge of whether it has ever been attempted or what merit it may actually have. (That is why 'theoretical run' appears in the reach name.)

The class/rating is purely conjecture, and may have to be altered if/when we get reports from anyone who has actually run it.

The gradient of 30 fpm average and 70 fpm in the steepest mile could mean some fine rapids, or could be 'frittered away' with little more than swiftwater. Unfortunately there is not sufficient resolution on the satellite images in this area to discern anything about the river and possible rapids.

A couple of alternative access points are available to shorten the trip (see Map tab, and zoom in for particulars).

It is not known whether it is truly feasible to boat (I.E., how badly wooded up and brambled up the stream may be), nor is it known how parking and access are at the listed put-in/take-out. Alternate accesses may be advisable or necessary.

Anyone ever explored it? Or, interested in attempting some reconnaissance? Use the 'New Report' button to provide additional input for your fellow boaters!

We do have one very preliminary report from Brendan Hammond who provided (2009-12-14):

While working for the Forest Service this past summer, I was in the area and was able to catch a glimpse of this stream in a couple of places. There were no major rapids, only minor ledges and swiftwater. This narrow little stream was set in a deep, steep sided valley with little to no floodplain. This leads me to believe that some nice waves might develop at higher flows. There is a control structure/dam at the outlet of the lake upstream (of the put-in).

River Features

Put In (Drainage 28 sq.mi.)

Distance: 0 mi

Put-in below the dam off of Drummond Dam Road.

Approximate put-in elevation is 1240'.

Our listed take-out elevation is 920'.

Thus elevation change is approximately 320'

making overall gradient ~28.4 FPM.

Drainage at the put-in is 28 square miles.

Drainage at the take-out is 49.7 square miles (a 77.5% increase).

And, this is as good a place as any for an aside ... normally the software/data-layer calculation of the length of various runs tends to be very close to the length I had gotten via tracing the stream on GoogleMaps. This one, oddly, is quite 'off'. GoogleMaps measures distance to our listed (private property) take-out as 11.33 miles (vs. AW/data-layer distance of 8.6 miles), and distance to the Raymond Avenue/ 'Taylor Lane'/'Anderson Road' bridge take-out as 12.05 miles (vs AW/data-layer distance of 9.2 miles).

Take Out

Distance: 8.6 mi
Take Out

On some maps, this road is labeled 'Taylor Lane', while others list it as 'Anderson Road'.

Aerial maps appear to show a private residence, so it may be necessary to ask permission to park and access (exit) the river at this location.

Otherwise ... use the next 'Alternate Take-out'.

Alternate take-out

Distance: 9.21 mi
Access Point

If no home-owner can be found to obtain permission to park at our listed take-out, it may be necessary to see if adequate roadside parking exists to use this road crossing as a take-out.
