Pit
Pit 1: Fall River Mills to Pit River Campground(Pit 1 Run)
Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportWell attended release. Great flow level. Be advised that while PG&E may start the release flow on Friday, as they did on this weekend, the required release days are only Saturday and Sunday.
Rafters be aware: There is a ripper rock just under the surface mid-stream just after Unhappy Ending.
We put a 7' gash in a SOTAR in the flat-water runout from the rapid last year. If I recall, it was only about 50' after the end of the last move right in mid-current at average flow. We have no idea what did it, but it was immediate. I had the boat sideways as we were looking back at the rapid a slice sound and a hiss right across the side of the left-side tube.
I'll be staying further left or right after the last move in that aptly-named drop.
Beautiful fall days at Pit Falls.
Long Class III section near the top of the run. This section culminates in Unhappy Ending
Nice Surf Wave in the middle of this rapid, if you can catch the eddy.
Access built by PG&E without input from American Whitewater. Limited parking, long hike to the river, no trailer turn around are just a few of the issues.
First Rapid below Pit Falls. Fun boof behind the center rock.
Theresa Simsiman showing how to run this rapid. The pivot sets you up nicely to miss the hole and the rock half way through the rapid.
Long rapid - the main feature is Egg Beater- a set of egg shaped rocks forming some big hydraulics. No great line here, read it and eat it.
Enjoying a fall release on the Pit River.
Note there is a designated Put -In just past the Pit River Bridge on the Right hand side of the Road. This is the Put In that is to be used.
There are several turnouts on 299 that give nice views down into the lower canyon. I spent a bit of time scrambling around for different views.
Sunday of the release flows increased to 1100 cfs from Saturdays 800 cfs. I did not really notice the difference at first, but things were coming a bit faster, I missed a move or two and I got spanked in two places where I had no trouble on Saturday.
800 cfs was a nice technical flow, shallow in spots, but not pushy.
This is a fun boof at flows above 1000 cfs
Raft about to have an unhappy ending.
This is the unhappy ending in unhappy ending, a picket fence with no obvious route. The best line is left to right in front of the fence.
The left side of the falls contains a series of drops ranging from 10' to 4'. Fun but be sure to keep your nose up.
This is a fun boof at flows above 1000cfs.
