Log in to add a report5.23ft on the Westbrook gauge. 30 min before high tide. River right seems like a class III. center and left look more difficult.
A closer view of the river right line. Feels like a class III. Flow and tide determine if this line is runnable. 5.23ft on the gauge and 30 min before high tide.
Ran the Falls section at 4.98 according to the AW reporting. Accessed via the Portland Trails trailhead at the end of Overset Rd (south side of river). You could access it from the Allen Ave. parking area on the north side of the river but it'd be a longer walk.
Follow the main trail right down to the river, maybe 200 yards upstream of the Falls. The Falls is a short rapid. Multiple runs are possible via the trail , easily runnable multiple times if desired.
I'm a solid Class III, stepping into Class IV, and I considered this level mostly unrunnable, except for the far left line (river left). Everything in the center looked pretty dicey. A few possible eddies and runnable chutes, but most of the chutes are narrow or have pointy rocks at the bottom. The bottom, largest center chute lands right on top of a large boulder and forms some blowback. The right has some doable areas but ends up far too rocky towards the end. No room.
Top section has a nice green wave but if you lose it you'll end up in lots of rocks and scary holes. Instead, you can eddy out on the left or right.
So starting at the top, I went river left, took the top eddy, then followed the current along river left to a 5-foot drop. A decent eddy here allows you to avoid a powerful chute with a sticky hole. Be cautious because the drop, and the eddy, are right next to the main, huge chute and hole. There's a lot of foamy, powerful flow just beyond the hole.
Staying on river left: the flow forms another chute in left/center, and the left side is split by a rock, forming a smaller, calmer chute on far left. The calmer chute has a pointy rock in it but you can squeeze by it if needed. Or, take the left/center, large main chute and eddy out behind the rock.
There's a foamy, fast, irregular wave train at this point...pretty much just one decent wave, then a smaller one about 30 feet downstream.

ran this at 6.66 5/2/11. all class I except a burly rapid towards the end. at this level I'd say it's a hard class IV, borderline class V. put in behind the hannaford at the nature conservation. walk the train tracks to the river but be sneaky (apparently this is trespassing and we were harassed). take out at the park on allen ave exn. you could always put in at the take out and paddle upstream to the rapid for some play.
