Jim Falls Whitewater Releases (WI)

Today's the day!

Jim Falls whitewater releases are scheduled recreational flow events on the Chippewa River at the Jim Falls Hydroelectric Project near Jim Falls, Wisconsin. On six select dates through the summer, gates are opened to provide peak flows of approximately 650 cfs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., creating a rare opportunity to boat this 0.75-mile Class II–III pool-drop reach of the Chippewa River below the old County Y bridge. Throughout April and May, higher base flows of about 850 cfs are also maintained to support lake sturgeon and other fish species. Access is via Old Abe Wayside Park for the put-in, with an established take-out and parking downstream.

These releases exist because of advocacy and collaboration during the project’s federal relicensing process. American Whitewater played an important role in securing scheduled boating flows through the Lower Chippewa River settlement agreement filed with FERC in 2001. The release program remains an annual operating requirement of the Jim Falls Project and was expanded in 2016 to include additional events, ensuring continued whitewater recreation opportunities on this reach.

If you take advantage of these opportunities, please be sure to sign in at the put‐in location and include any comments you might have. These sheets will be used to evaluate participation and help make informed decision regarding future flow releases. Your cooperation is appreciated.
