Fourth of July weekend marks Independence Day for the South Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine since it is the first schedule release of the Canada Falls (Class V) Section of the Penobscot and the Seboomook Section of the West Branch (Class III). Canada Falls is a Class V creek and requires good boating skills.

If Class V is not your thing you can run the Seboomook Section of the West Branch of the Penobscot just on the other side of Seboomook Lake. Seboomook is rated class III at the summer release levels. Seboomook was also included on the new release agreement between American Whitewater and the Dam owners.

Thanks to American Whitewater and New England FLOW the Seboomook section will have boatable levels throughout the Summer months. Minimum daily flows will be increased to 500cfs. This flow will be available 24/7. In addition there will be a special “high water” release on Saturday, September 3rd at 1500 cfs.

Flow information system: Flow information will be available from April 1st until October 15th. (Please note that there may be additional non-scheduled boatable flows throughout the season when it is necessary to move water downstream for flood control or generation capacity).

For current flow information go to the Great Lakes Hydro America website and look under Seboomook Dam.

Celebrate these release with AW members, volunteers, and friends at Pittston Farm on the shore of the South Branch of the Penobscot River.  This celebratory gathering will be help on July 2nd at 6:30, for more information and reservations contact Pittston Farm at 207-280-0000.
