American Whitewater is proud to announce that Clay Wright is the volunteer of the month for December of 2005.  Clay is being recognized for his efforts as a contributor to the American Whitewater Journal.  For years Clay has shared his wealth of whitewater knowledge with us through his bi-monthly column “Clay’s Corner”.  Clay’s infinite wisdom of safety, creeking, freestyle, and everything whitewater is why his column has become a favorite of many loyal journal readers.

Clay has been a member of the US Freestyle team since 1995 and is the current US Freestyle National Champion.  Clay is a team paddler and designer for Jackson Kayaks and travels most of the year but calls Rock Island, TN home.

Clay’s work on the AW journal is just a small part of the huge volunteer effort to make each AW issue happen.  From volunteer editors such as Tim Catalano, column contributors Clay Wright and Sue Taft, along with photo donations from Jed Selby, Charlie Munsey, and Dunbar Hardy along with many others make the journal come to your door every 8 weeks.  To learn how you can write or submit photos for the American Whitewater Journal go to: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Wiki/aw:journal_article_submission

A short bio on Clay from Clay:
I was raised by a whitewater canoeing family, so I got started young. Too small to carry even one end of a canoe, I lucked out and got to kayak instead! I was a weekender / club boater with the Central Georgia River Runners through high-school, went to ‘higher education’ 30 minutes from Woody Calloway and Risa Shimoda’s house in NC, then became a video boater on the Gauley River after graduation. This led to lots of creeking, playboating, shooting ww videos, sponsorship, and eventually work with Pyranha then Perception Kayaks and now Jackson Kayak.
