Pending Legislation Threatens Wild and Scenic Rivers

Several bills currently threaten Wild and Scenic Rivers throughout the country, including the St. Croix in Minnesota and Wisconsin (HR 850/S1134), California’s Merced River (HR 869 and 2578), and Oregon’s Crooked River (HR 2060). These bills will be moving out of committee this fall.

Congress established the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act to protect the outstanding values of the nation’s most cherished free flowing rivers for current and future generations. A Wild and Scenic designation protects the outstandingly remarkable values of free flowing rivers, bolstering surrounding communities and providing clean water and recreational opportunities. These bills threaten the integrity of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System by allowing for development, and we do not believe that Congress should make this kind of exception for rivers that have been set aside for permanent protection.

Since the Wild and Scenic Rivers System was established in 1968, American Whitewater has advocated for their responsible management, and the protection and preservation of the values these rivers provide. We recently joined with other conservation organizations and many of our Affiliate Clubs in submitting a letter to Congress opposing these bills.  A link to a copy of our letter can be found to the right.
