Savage releases

September 21, 2000

The USKCT and American Whitewater have tentatively secured releases for racing and recreation on the Savage river Sept. 29, 30 and Oct. 1 of this year (2000). Releases are contingent upon clearing river debris to the satisfaction of the Upper Potomac Commission and we are asking anyone able to help in this effort to meet at the steel bridge on Savage River Road approximately one mile upriver from Bloomington, MD on Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. Bring a chain saw if you are able and be prepared to walk in water and handle wood.
We are aware that these dates coincide with the Ohiopyle Falls race however their proximity should allow mutual participation. Many will recognize the Savage river as the sight of many previous race events including the '89 worlds, but due to lack of recent releases the river has been virtually off line. Above all we want to keep this a safe event to help demonstrate to officials that future releases are viable, so please, consider your skill level before attempting the Savage. Portions of the river are technical class IV with powerful hydraulics, the water is ice cold and at least one boater drowned here a few years ago.
Contact <nick@amwhitewater.org> for further info and current status-these releases have NOT been guaranteed as of this posting 9/21/2000.
