WAKE-UP CALL

Editor — The recent articles (Sept. 15 and 16) regarding the Hetch Hetchy water and power system should serve as a wake-up call to the people of the Bay Area and the nation. San Francisco’s lack of good stewardship over the water system has left the system in a deteriorated
condition. San Francisco’s use of Hetch Hetchy Valley as the "water tank" that John Muir described has left the American people without access to this magnificent natural resource for 80 years.

It’s time for San Francisco to participate in a comprehensive feasibility study to demonstrate ways to address its infrastructure needs and restore Hetch Hetchy Valley to the American people. Responsible environmental groups such as Restore Hetch Hetchy, Sierra Club and Environmental Defense oppose Proposition A, the $1.6 billion water revenue bond proposal, because of San Francisco’s unwillingness to participate in this important environmental study.
