Opposition to Registration Permits is Successful in Maine

March 26, 2003

Your letters, phone calls, and emails were successful. MaineToday.com reports that the legislature’s “Joint Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife voted unanimously to drop Gov. John Baldacci’s proposal to raise money by imposing a $6 registration fee on canoes and kayaks.”

American Whitewater wrote Maine’s Governor Baldacci and the Senate to express our concern about the effects of the proposed registration fee on canoers, kayakers, and rafters who live in or visit the state.

The MaineToday.com article credits pressure from American Whitewater for inspiring the government to take a second look at the proposal.
