American Whitewater is seeking motivated volunteers with access to the libraries at Washington and Lee University and Virginia Tech. These volunteers are needed to research and organize historical and legal information regarding navigability, water rights, and land ownership in the state of Virginia. This information will be utilized by American Whitewater staff and volunteers in our work on a variety of stream access projects in Virginia.

We intend to have a lawyer oversee this coordinated research effort. While a legal and/or real estate background would be helpful in this research it may not be neccessary if you have strong library research skills. We need a small team of volunteers of 2-6 individuals to work on this project this spring. This project may be considered as a volunteer internship for college students based on discussions with American Whitewater staff.

We are excited to continue our ongoing work to improve stream access in Virginia with this research initiative, and encourage all those willing to spend some time in the libraries listed above to call or email Kevin Colburn (kevin@amwhitewater.org, 828-252-6482).
