The Curry Mine is a proposed 480 acre strip mine along the banks of the Youghiogheny River, just below the southern border of Ohiopyle State Park and adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail. This proposed mine could impact on the Yough and two of its high-quality tributaries, Morgan and Johnson Runs. The Fayette County Zoning Board denied Amerikohl Mining’s request for a zoning variance, but now the company has appealed the zoning board’s decision. They have also submitted a revised application with the Department of Environmental Protection for the mining permit on the Curry property. To date, legal expenses defending for the Yough from this threat have totaled over $8,000. Expenses continue to increase due to the appeal and a second round of the DEP permitting process.
Numerous businesses and citizens are sponsoring this event with 100% of the proceeds helping to cover legal expenses incurred in defending the Yough from the proposed Curry Mine. This event benefits the Yough Defense Fund of the Youghiogheny.
