The Appalachian Paddling Enthusiasts (APEs) invite everyone to come out to the banks of the beautiful Nolichucky River on May 21st, 2005, to celebrate a festival in memory of good friend and fellow paddler John Heffernan.  John, an avid and accomplished kayaker who loved to help others learn about the sport, lost his life on the Russell Fork River this past October.  The festival will be held at Big Rock Campground near Erwin, TN and will run from noon until 10:30 PM.  HeffFest will be devoted to fun—in, on, and next to the river.  Planned events include: an exciting downriver race through the Lower Nolichucky; paddling instruction by certified teachers; kayak, canoe, and rafting opportunities for paddlers of all levels; paddler’s flea market; silent auction; vendor booths; boat demos; boat raffle for Wavesport kayak of choice; fabulous food, T-shirts and souvenirs; bluegrass music; kids activities and games; and, an on-site whitewater rodeo at Big Rock playspot as water levels permit.  Tickets are $10, $5 for kids under 13 and children under 3 are free.  Camping is available on-site at Big Rock Campground first come, first serve.  For those interested in paddling the Nolichucky Gorge, shuttles will be available from Chestoa at 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:30AM and 12:30PM for $5.  Additionally, there will be a memorial paddle down the gorge in John’s honor on Sunday that will begin at the Poplar, NC put-in at 11:00AM.  All proceeds from HeffFest will go to benefit American Whitewater.  Become a part of this very special event. Mark you calendar, May 21, 2005.  BE AT HEFF FEST!
