AW has been hard at work negotiating a long term plan for the Feather with PG&E and our other Agency partners. This plan will include:
• Two release weekends per month.
• Permanent funding for the Shuttle.
• Improvements to put-in and take-out locations.
• Better camping facilities in the canyon.
• Development of hiking trails along the river.
• Adding a play feature below the Cresta Powerhouse.
In our continued efforts to meet all the needs of the resource and its recreational constituents, we have agreed not to increase the number of releases this year. This plan will also allow more time to evaluate the biological monitoring information that we have collected over the past four years.
AW is very proud of the collaborative efforts made with our partners, the Forrest Service, the State Water Board, Fish and Game, Butte and Plumas Counties, several angling organizations and of course PG&E. “The North Fork Feather River is the best example of what clean hydropower can be” according to California Stewardship Director, Dave Steindorf. “ We are restoring this canyon as a recreational and ecological resource”. “ The solution will include using all of the projects on the Feather to coordinate recreational use and allow all recreational users to share this fabulous resource.”
AW signed the settlement agreement for the Oroville Project in March, this was the third agreement that AW signed in the Feather basin. The Poe project, the lowest on the North Fork, and the South Fork Feather project, are all that remain and we hope to complete those this year. “This is my tenth year of working on the projects on the Feather” according to Steindorf, “ the reality is that these things never end, as long as the rivers keep flowing they require our attention”.
Remember to frequent canyon establishments including, Tobin Resort, Belden Town, Caribou Corners, Scooters Café, Storrie Retreat.
