The National Park Service says Will Davenport was with his mother and a friend below Erbie when their canoe hit a rock and capsized.The canoe got pinned under a tree and the boy was trapped. Other canoeists called the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. Emergency responders used a chainsaw to free the canoe. A ranger and a sheriff’s deputy used CPR to try to revive Will. A ground ambulance and a medical helicopter took him to the hospital in Harrison but doctors were not able to save him.
