Man, 25, reported missing after canoe capsizes in Tuscarawas River on Saturday morning Staff Report, The Times-Reporter, New Philadelphia, OH Rescue personnel continue to search the Tuscarawas River from Port Washington to Gnadenhutten for a 25-year-old man, Monday, June 6 in Tuscarawas County. The man went missing early Saturday morning after his canoe capsized. His 27-year-old friend was able to swim ashore and call 911. PORT WASHINGTON — A 25-year-old man was missing after a canoe capsized in the Tuscarawas River on Saturday morning. The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office reported being told at 8:20 a.m. Saturday that a canoe used by two men, ages 27 and 25, had turned over near River Hill Road and South St. Clairsville Road just outside the village of Port Washington. The Amish continue to gather as rescue personnel continue to search the Tuscarawas River from Port Washington to Gnadenhutten for a 25-year-old man, Monday, June 6 in Tuscarawas County. The man went missing early Saturday morning after his canoe capsized. His 27-year-old friend was able to swim ashore and call 911. The 27-year-old was able to get ashore and call 911. But he lost sight of the 25-year-old, who has been identified by Sheriff Orvis Campbell as Keith Edward Schlabach of the Baltic area. Firefighters, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the sheriff’s office responded for a search and rescue. The man remained missing as of Monday morning. Note that it would be safe to assume that the paddler lost in this case did not have a PFD on and was dressed in every day Amish clothing. Not at all appropriate for immersion in water. Both incidents happened “in my back yard” and I’m very familiar with the river sections involved; But I do not have first hand knowledge of either event. Our area has a large Amish population and most are “Schwertzentruber”/ Old Order which leads to my assumption on how the one person was dressed.
