Locals say thuis is fast moving flat water. A second adult passenger survived, said Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman. He said the pair were riding in the canoe around 5:45 p.m. when it flipped near the shoreline of the Rodeway Inn & Suites on Hayden Island. The river was moving fast, and water temperatures were between 40 and 50 degrees, Chatman said. Both factors likely made it difficult for the person to swim after they fell into the water, he said.
