Non-Witness Narrative by (do not publish name) on 2008-04-28 (okay to publish): Kayaking accident on Brule River By SUSAN FRAHM,Staff Writer POSTED: April 21, 2008 Email: “Kayaking accident on Brule River” IRON RIVER — A kayaking accident on the Brule River on Sunday injured the kayaker and a helpful friend, according to troopers at the Iron River satellite post of the state police. Iron County 911 received a report of a man down along the river bank with cardiac problems at noon on Sunday. Troopers and Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers responded to the Brule River in Mastodon Township. Gary Neeley, 52, of Crystal Falls was kayaking with two other people when his kayak overturned, injuring his leg and bringing on chest pain, troopers reported. A member of Neeley’s party, Laverne Martin of Alpha, walked approximately one-quarter mile down river to a home to call for help. Martin then continued down river approximately one-half mile where she stepped in a hole and broke her ankle. Neeley was removed from the site by Iron County search and rescue and was transported to Iron County Community Hospital for treatment. Information regarding his condition was not available this morning. Martin was rescued shortly thereafter by Florence County search teams. Troopers and DNR officers were assisted by Iron County Search and Rescue, Alpha-Mastodon Fire Department and Iron County EMS.
