Description

Non-Witness Narrative by (name not provided) on 2012-06-19 (okay to publish): Kayaker rescued on Sandy River The Clackamas County Search and Rescue team was called yesterday evening to a report of a kayaker stranded along the Sandy River. Rescue efforts were suspended late last night do to unsafe conditions and restarted this morning at daylight. Members for Mountain Wave Communications, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue (PNW), Clackamas Fire, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, AMR, and Army Air National Guard, responded to the scene. The kayaker was in a location that he was unable to paddle down any further, due to hazards across the river. He was stranded between two cliffs and unable to climb out on his own. Members of PNW contacted the kayaker as other members of their group hiked down towards him from the other side of the river. The Army Air National Guard flew into the area with a Blackhawk helicopter. As they were assessing the location of the stranded kayaker, the roader wash from the helicopter cause a large landslide. This sent large rocks and trees down towards the kayaker and members of PNW. The kayaker sustained an injury to his shoulder during the land slide. It was determined the risk of using the helicopter was to large due to all of the falling debris. Members from PNW performed minor first aid to the kayaker, placing his arm in a sling to immobilize it. PNW then hoisted the kayaker and one rescuer about 100 feet up the cliff. He was then walked back about a quarter of a mile to an awaiting American Medical Response ambulance. The kayaker was identified as Ashish Mishra 26 years old of SW Portland. He was transported to Mount Hood Hospital. Over 25 volunteers and 8 firefighters took part in the rescue. – Posted: Sun. 17th, 02:26 PM http://www.flashalert.net/news.html?id=624
