Witness Narrative by (name not provided) on 2012-07-20 (okay to publish): My wife and I put in at the Hwy 58 bridge and ran the first rapid under the bridge fine. We paddled through the long flatwater section and entered the rapid many refer to as “Drowning Ford”, which is a breaking drop to river right with several wave trains following. I ran through first fine, my wife hit the entrance but flipped in the first hole after the initial drop. Upon flipping, she failed to protect her face by “tucking” and struck her forehead just below the front lip of her helmet on a rock. She did not loose consciousnesses and was able to swim out. She suffered a laceration to her lower middle forehead roughly 2 inches long that required around 10 stitches. I was luckily wearing a neoprene shirt and I wrapped it around her head and secured it with a throw rope to stop the bleeding, which was fairly generous. We walked out along the creeper trail approximately 1 mile until we met a relative that took us to the hospital. The entire accident would have been prevented by a proper “tuck” for protection, as I witnessed her posture before entering the water during the flip as sitting fully upright. A full face helmet would have also greatly reduced the injury. Please be aware of this jagged/sharp rock directly in the line/hole of this rapid around 800 cfs +/-.
