Description

TWO RAFTERS, ONE CANOEIST DIE IN ALASKA June 4: Mathew Craig, a 24 year old bush pilot for Doug Geeting Aviation, flipped while canoeing the Lower Susitna with a friend near Takleetna. This stretch has a fast current, no rapids, and icy water. Craig last seen floating downstream, holding onto the canoe. His friend made it to shore and reported the accident. The boat was found downstream, but he was still missing on June 8. No life vests or protective gear were used.. SOURCE: Anchorage Daily News via Steve Robinson ANALYSIS: The power and speed of the Alaskan rivers, combined with their icy cold water, makes swims dangerous. Protective gear must be worn, and one-boat trips are strongly discouraged because of the lack of safety backup. Bob Glanville
