February 21, 2026

The family of Gabriel J. Vaughn is profoundly relieved to confirm that Gabriel has been located alive following a multi-day search and rescue operation in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Gabriel was located along the river on February 20th and airlifted to a local hospital. He was later transferred via airlift again to a hospital better equipped to meet his medical needs. He remains in critical but stable condition in the ICU at this time. The next few days will be very important in determining his overall prognosis.

Gabriel was discovered approximately two miles downstream from his last known location near Greenwall Rapids on the Illinois River after prolonged exposure to severe weather and rugged terrain. He is currently undergoing extensive medical evaluation and treatment.

2/20/26 UPDATE: Gabriel has been located safely. A private party that has been coordinating with Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard found Gabriel approximately 2 miles downstream from where he was last seen. The Coast Guard is currently working on an extraction plan to get Gabriel to an area hospital.
