Description

Drowning at Salt River during Memorial Day weekend

Published: May 26, 2026

MESA, AZ MCSO deputies say 22-year-old Sahr Sewah was reported missing at the river on Saturday afternoon. After an extensive search, Sewah’s body was recovered on Sunday. The stretch of the Salt River draws huge crowds every summer, especially on holiday weekends. It may look calm, but deputies said conditions can change quickly.  You’ll get into areas where it narrows down and tightens up a little bit, gets shallower, and then you encounter rapid type situations,” said Sgt. Rob Marske.

Sewah disappeared Saturday May23rd after deputies said he fell off a tube. Investigators said he was not wearing a life jacket. Blake was seen struggling Monday morning while trying to swim across the river. Deputies said he was also not wearing a life jackeJt” Marske said holiday weekends bring thousands of people to the Salt River, and many of them underestimate how dangerous it can be.

“It’s not a lazy river all the time,” Marske said. Changing depths, fast-moving currents, and thick underwater eel grass can entangle swimmers. Deputies are reminding anyone who comes to the Salt River to never swim alone and always to bring a life jacket.

“No one is invincible and adults need to lead by example to their children,” Marske said.
