Description

Body of missing Snake River drowning victim found by Palisades campers

The body of Tory J. Raether, 55, of Charlotte, North Carolina was found by campers along the shore of Palisade Reservoir on Saturday.

According to the Star Valley Search & Rescue, the campers in the McCoy Creek area spotted Raether from the shore. They paddle boarded out to him and called authorities. Star Valley Search & Rescue volunteers were on the water searching for Raether at the time, giving them a quick response to the scene to recover his body.

Raether had been missing since Saturday, July 4 after jumping into the Snake River without a life jacket. He had floated the river with family and friends when they stopped at Jump Rock, a popular recreational location along the river for people to jump in, located up river from the Sheep Gulch Boat Ramp roughly 3 1/2 miles east of Alpine.

After jumping in, Raether began to struggle against the strong current. Multiple attempts were made by other members of his party to rescue him but were unsuccessful. Star Valley Search & Rescue was called to the scene at roughly 7:00 p.m. where a search operation ensued until it was unsafe to continue due to nightfall.

Search operations resumed the following morning on Sunday, July 5 using multiple drones, rafts, jet skis and a jet boat. The search continued each day throughout the week, until Raether was finally found on July 11.
