Jeff Speares, 22, met a friend on November 10, 1996 to run Jones Creek in Unita County, UT. He apparently ran a slot, flipped, but even though he had a great roll he never attempted one. His partner was on shore setting safety, and was able to grab the kayak and right it within seconds. He pulled Speares out of his boat, and began CPR. He noted that the pull tab on Speares’ sprayskirt was missing, but it is unclear if this contributed to the accident.
