Arizona woman drowns in Green River kayaking accident By Bob Mims, The Salt Lake Tribune Updated Jun 1, 2011 09:02AM The victim of a Green River drowning has been identified as a Tucson, Ariz., woman. The Grand County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday said Shirley Palmer, 73, drowned when her inflatable kayak flipped on the river’s Wire Fence Rapids about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.The incident occurred about 37 miles up river from the eastern Utah town of Green River. Deputy Louis Manson said that other members of the kayak outing were able to recover Palmer in about 15 minutes after she flipped, but attempts to revive her on the scene, and later at the Swasey Takeout, were unsuccessful. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/51923905-78/river-green-flipped-kayak.html.csp Roy Webb TEXT River Description: There’s a bit of flatwater at the top which takes most of the first day. The rest of the trip is mostly class II “run-it-down-the-tongue” kinda rapids. There are a couple of class-III rapids called Wire Fence and Three Fords that offer up a bit more challenge, but nothing too hard for novices.
