09-03-11 CORNWALL, CT DEEP Identifies Kayaker Who Drowned In The Housatonic Hartford Courant (09-04-11) The Connecticut Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection has identified the Long Island man who died in the Housatonic River Sat. (09-03). The body of Kenneth Wallace, 54, of Huntington Station, NY, was recovered at 7:45 p.m. Sat. According to Dennis Schain, a DEEP spokesperson, Wallace’s kayak tipped over in rapid waters a mi. S. of the covered bridge in Cornwall. Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene. Wallace was with 2 other kayakers who made it to the shore. The covered bridge is just off Route 7 in W. (AP) – A New York man who went missing after his kayak tipped over in the raging waters of a Connecticut river has been found dead. Dennis Schain with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection says Kenneth J. Wallace, 54, of Long Island had his kayak overturn early Saturday night near the West Cornwall Covered Bridge over the Housatonic River. The man’s two companions made it safely to shore in their kayaks. The man’s body was recovered in the water at 7:45 p.m. His name hasn’t yet been released. The red-painted bridge is believed to have been built in 1864. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Copyright Associated Press Level was 2030 cfs, a medium flow. Poster to the New Englan Paddler’s Message Board said that these were recreational kayaks, and PFD’s were not used.
