The Sacramento Fire Department’s water rescue team recovered the body of William Lake, 53, at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the American River near Northgate Boulevard. According to a department spokesman, an onlooker attempted to help as Lake struggled to swim to his small raft but was unable to keep Lake afloat due to the strong current and Lake’s weight. Lake was not wearing a life jacket and the department deemed his raft as unsafe for floating down the river.
