man died yesterday on the north branch potomac, somewhere in robin’s nest, part of our group were involved in the search, others wentfor help where they found the body , and tried cpr I believe his name wad Lou Patterson out of Herdon It was great day on the water gone wrong at the end. Not something I want to see again anytime soon. Based on what the son told me when we first came up on scene was that his dad got sucked in to the hole at the bottom of Robin’s Nest and had appeared to self rescue himself so the son went after the kayak and once he retrieve the kayak he could not find his father. Our group split up with some of the group heading down river to look and the rest stay at Robin’s Nest to continue the search. Myself and two others in an inflatable tandem kayak headed down river came up on another group about 300 yards above Top of the world. They were blowing whistles to get our attention and when I got to the shore, one of the young men in that group had just stopped his resuscitation efforts. He tried for 20 minutes but was unsuccessful in reviving him. One of the other people in the group that found the man’s body called 911 We put the body into a tandem inflatable kayak that the couple I was with was paddling and met the authorities at the boat ramp before the takeout. Tried my best to console the son after he got off the river and got the news but obviously no words could have helped yesterday. A real shame to since it was the son’s personal first descent of the north branch and he said his dad was very experienced with the North Branch. Bitter ending to a good day. Hope I don’t experience another one like that.
