Description

Two were tossed from a canoe on the Delaware River; one man is missing By Frank WarnerOf The Morning Call, Allentown, PA A man and a woman were tossed from their canoe into the Delaware River on Friday afternoon in the area of the Delaware Water Gap, but only the woman was found, officials said. The 39-year-old man from New Jersey was last seen as the canoe capsized about 3 p.m. just upstream of the Interstate 80 bridge, National Park Service officials said. The man was still missing six hours later, when officials of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area called off the search until Saturday morning. The woman who was with him was rescued by recreation area visitors and taken to a boat ramp at Kittatinny Point, Hardwick, N.J. Then she was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Neither the man nor the woman was wearing a life vest when their canoe capsized, officials said. Officials said that, because the river is high and the current is strong, only experienced canoers should be on the river. The recreation area’s three beaches are closed to swimming because of the strong current, but picnic areas are open on both sides of the river. fwarner@mcall.com 610-820-6508
