Description

There were a minimum of 10 cattle crossing fences across this reach, most of which were barbed wire fences. After a blind bend in the river, maybe 2 miles downstream of the put in, there was a non-barbed wire fence that took my partner and I by surprise and we got caught in it. We were lucky to eject from our boats and the water was flowing low enough to allow us to pass underneath the fence, but in higher flows we would not have been able to swim through the fence. Bend in the river is such that ample time to take out and portage around the fence is not allowed. Due to the high frequency of fence crossings, condition that most are barbed wire, and that they sometimes lie around a sharp bend in the river, I believe the hazards along this reach make it extremely high risk and do not recommend it for paddlers of any skill level.
